Confession; I like Christmas.
Ok, frenzied conspicuous consumption and Jesus are really not my thing at all. Love often gets lost in the corporate hustle and Christ carries a lot of baggage into his mass; baggage that for many is exclusive, divisive, self-righteous, or downright preposterous.
BUT, I think we need a shared major holiday, an excuse to enforce a shared rest period, a time to stop our normal activities and love and be loved, a time where the disconnected reconnect, and the marginalized are reached out to. Should we do this all the time? Yes. But we don't. ...And I think it is a great idea to cover everything in lights in the bleakness of winter.
I like to imagine a time in the future when we will evolve past the illusion of separation between people and cultures, and surpass the need to cling to mythologies to define ourselves. I like to imagine a common global pause, where not only people but cities and countries give each other gifts, where dark places are filled with light; a "mass" for humanity where unconditional love is the theme.
Happy Holidays Everyone.
